After 20 years of Outlook having a yellow icon we as users have trained our brain to look for the familar color. Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided it would be effective and productive to screw with our brains and change the icon to blue in Office 2013/365. The new blue, which nearly matches the colors used for Word and Lync, instantly  creates a frustrating user experience for those who have become accustomed to the yellow icon.

There are other tips out there on how you can change the icon on the desktop (http://www.outlook-tips.net/tips/change-outlook-2013s-icon/), but the icon for the taskbar is burried inside some dlls, so I thought there has got to be away to do this...And as it turns out, there is...order can be restored! Read on:

How To replace icons manually:

  1. Downloaded Resource Hacker: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
  2. Open up the files I mention below, and use the "Action->Replace Icon" function.
  3. Click the numerical values on the right hand side of the pop up until you see the new blue O icon.
  4. Click "Open file with new icon" and browse to "outlook2013-Fixed Icons.ico" provided in the zip file below.
  5. Click "open"
  6. Click "replace"
  7. File->Save
  8. Repeat for the remaining files.
  9. Restart your computer
  10. If all icons aren't updated, rebuild your icon cache (from: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html) as follows:
  1. Close and save anything that you are working on. This command will kill explorer and restart the computer when completed.
  2. Open a command prompt in Windows 7 or Windows 8.
  3. In the command prompt, Copy and paste each command line below exactly as is one at a time and press enter after each command.
  4. WARNING: The last command will restart the computer, so be sure to close and save anything that you are working on first.

ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A
shutdown /r /f /t 00

How to Replace the iconds with modified DLLs

  • Download my modified DLLs (Updated 5/18/15 - Now changes tray icon!) This comes with no warranties express or implied. If you download the files you assume all risk/responsibilities and are agreeing that you have a valid license for Microsoft 2013/365, download here
  • Change the taskbar icon:

Copy outllibr.dll to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\1033

  • Change the icon in the start menu:

Copy outicon.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\vfs\Windows\Installer\{90150000-000F-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

  • Change the icon in the executable

Copy outlook.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15

  • Unknow what effect it has, but I rebuilt it with new icons anyway.,
